Will Social Media Relics Rise Again

Can you imagine a world without Facebook? Or Twitter? Or even LinkedIn? These titans of the internet have only been around for a few years, and yet life without them would seem very strange indeed for the millions of people who use the social networks on a daily basis.

And yet, once upon a time, back at the dawn of the millennium, the same could have been said for a number of other social media networks.

Who remembers Friendster, for example? What about the almighty MySpace? Google’s Orkut? SixDegrees? These are all social networks of old that have been overtaken by today’s social media behemoths.

Amazingly, some of these sites are now making their comebacks, keeping their famous brands but reinventing themselves for a modern audience. Now it seems that there really is a chance that some of them could rise phoenix-like from the ashes once again.

The story of these first social networks, which is analysed in the following infographic, is a fascinating one. Not least because it could provide many important lessons to the giants of social media today. The internet is constantly changing, constantly evolving, and there is no saying just what new social experiences may pop up in one, five or 10 years from now.

After all, new social media experiences are appearing all the time. Take Snapchat, for example, or Vine. These have become household names virtually overnight, and today’s all-conquering giants of social media could be tomorrow’s old news.

So take a look through the following infographic, which provides a detailed analysis of some of the big social media names of old. It includes information such as why they faded rather than prospered over the years and includes some interesting facts that you may not have known.

One thing is for certain: today’s big social networks will be carefully studying the often rapid demises of their forebearers in the hope of avoiding the same fate. Whether they will succeed, of course, is another issue entirely.

Well, if you want to stay updated with latest trends in your the age of technology and social media then you must have the know-how of social media marketing to gain more exposure for your business, service and brand etc.

How To Increase Online Followers

If you want to use social media tools to help you with your online business, many of those sites work best when you develop a following. While many of your activities can be indexed online and found in search engines, the online community aspect of social media optimization (SMO) can be helpful because it can drive traffic to your websites and create a viral effect when your followers display your username and/or updates to their followers.

Here are some tips to help you increase online followers:

Follow People

Some tools let you search for specific demographics. By finding people who your website could appeal to, you could not just get a follower but you could get a follower who may buy something from you.

A good illustration of this is Twitter. If you were selling diet supplements, for instance, you might do a keyword search on words related to diets and those talking about the topic could be good people to follow.

Be A Good Online Citizen

Comment on people’s updates, re-post their updates.. be helpful. All these things can make you more follow-worthy.

Your Profile

If the site you’re posting on offers you a profile, this is a good opportunity to attract others. Use the photo, use the bio, use the links, and make yourself look worthy of being followed. Don’t use it to be boastful and don’t make your profile look overtly promotional. Look to mentors and peers for some good examples.

Manage Your Ratios

Look at your activities. Keep a low ratio of self- promotion. For every dozen updates, how many are self-serving versus helpful? This is something that people considering following you will look at. And, this is something that people following you may pay attention to. The results could impact whether or not they continue to follow you or not.

Provide Value

Do you provide interesting information on social networking sites? If the updates and links you share are interesting to people, you have a greater chance of them following you, clicking on your links, and re-posting your links on their profile. Go out of your way to be interesting and provide value to conversations and you’ll be on track to increase online followers, making your social networking much more powerful.
